What to expect on your first day

Although you may be nervous on your first day, it will be very exciting and fun. In this post we will describe some things they may happen on your first day as an international student in North America.

But we are going to let you know how the day will go so you won’t have to be so stressed out!

Note: activities that take place on your first day, will vary depending on what school you are attending.

A Very Busy First Day

Many people will be walking around the campus trying to find their classes. On the first day, depending on the school, there will most likely be a lot of school activities for you to attend.

The first day of school can be a bit overwhelming. You are now living in a new country, possibly learning a new language and now attending a new school. You first day will be full of important  information!

Don’t let your nerves take over. It is okay to be nervous. Many student feel a bit scared on this day. On the first day of class there will be a lot of people around trying to find their classes. If you feel nervous about your first day, you aren’t the only one. Your first day is also many students’ first day as well. Whether they are an international student or a domestic student, everyone may get a little nervous on their first day of college or university! But don’t let your nerves get to you, there are many people around campus that will help you throughout the day if needed.

Prior to your actual first day of classes, many schools will have an orientation.  The activities on orientation day vary depending on the school you are attending. But usually on orientation day you will get a campus tour and you will be shown all the different places and resources that are within the school. Check out more information about Orientation Days.

Information Overload

You first day is going to be filled with information. You will be meeting all your teachers and classmates on this day. Teachers will be discussing what will happen throughout the program. This day will include a lot of information to take in. But don’t worry. Teachers usually have all this information online or paper form for your to refer to in the future. Remember don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Be Prepared to Talk

Teachers and other students will be asking you questions; usually question about yourself so they can get to know you. You will be asking others questions as well. Try to get to know your classmates and teachers. If you have any questions regarding school, don’t be afraid to ask. On first days you may be participating in ‘ice breaker’ games. These games are a great way to get to know people and feel more comfortable in your new surroundings.

Ask for Help

Campuses can vary in size. But most campuses are pretty big! So if you happen to get lost, don’t be afraid to ask a teacher or another student for directions. Try to look for staff members if you are lost or ask another student passing by. Also campus maps will usually be available for new students. If you have some free time in your first day, use that time to explore the campus and locate your next classes.

Throughout your first day you will probably meet some international students that are just like you! Together you can help each other through adjust to your new surroundings.

Purchasing Text Books and Supplies

For each class there are usually textbooks and supplies that you will need to purchase. You will be told what is required prior to your first day of class. These supplies can usually be purchased on your orientation day or the first week of your program.

Be Aware of Policies

All campus have rules and regulations. Be sure to follow them and be safe. These rules will be told to you when you are on campus. If you have any questions, teachers and school staff will be happy to assist you.
