5. San Antonio, Texas

Coming in at number five on our list is San Antonio. This vibrant city is the second-largest city in Texas and the seventh-largest city in the United States. San Antonio’s cost of living is 11.3% below the national average, with the average monthly cost of a one-bedroom apartment going for US$1,200. Students can also look forward to saving money on groceries. For example, a half-gallon of milk costs 31% less than the national average in San Antonio. Between San Antonio’s lively festivals, amusement parks, world-class museums, and botanical gardens, there’s always something fun to do!

St. Louis’ cost of living is 12.6% below the national average, and the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment is an impressive US$856. 2. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa boasts a cost of living that is 14.8% lower than the national average, with the average monthly cost of a one-bedroom apartment just US$678. Tulsa’s median home price and monthly rent are below the national average by 26% and 31%, respectively, making this city’s housing the most affordable on our list!

1. Memphis, Tennessee

Carving out the top spot on our list is Memphis! With a population of 650,618, Memphis is a big city with a small-town vibe. This city’s musical heritage makes it a popular destination for aspiring musicians and music lovers. Memphis is the birthplace of much of what’s considered American popular music, from blues and soul to rock and roll, this city has had a major impact on the music realm. Memphis’ cost of living is an impressive 20.6% below the US average, and students can enjoy the city’s affordable rent, which is on average US$756 a month.
