About Bachelor of Arts - Art

Why study Art at Hartwick?

There is a passion for artwork, along with a desire to spend time in the studio perfecting craft and showcasing that work in galleries, shows, and museums.

Here’s why the Art program stands out:

  • Creative power is unleashed through cross-collaborations with business, political science, and technology to explore how art shapes and reflects the world.
  • Explore mediums like glass, ceramics, digital art, painting and drawing, 3D printing and printmaking, each with its own dedicated studio.
  • Gain insights from visiting artists and then venture off-campus to experiment with new mediums.
  • Artistic edge is sharpened in the real world through internships and practical studio experiences, providing opportunities to showcase talent and gain valuable experience.

Projected growth:

An art degree opens the door to various careers, with more than 5,500 openings projected per year for the next decade (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Here’s where Hartwick alumni are applying their art skills:

  • Corning Museum of Glass
  • The Los Angeles Times
  • Ink Injection Tattoo
  • Sundance Film Festival, NYC
  • The Childs Gallery
  • Casco Bay Glassworks
  • Otis Art Institute
  • Children’s Museum of Saratoga

What students will learn:

  • Develop a background in art history and gain an understanding of contemporary artistic practices.
  • Create dinnerware, blow glass, engage in silkscreen printing, take digital photography, and sketch live models.
  • Display work in exhibitions at the Foreman Gallery, around campus, or in the community.
  • Engage in hands-on experiences by joining the College’s Clay Club, or earn recognition through induction into Kappa Pi, the International Art Honor Society.
