Graduates of Fanshawe's Journalism program have exciting media careers across the country and around the world. They gain hands-on experience as storytellers and newscasters on the country's first-ever CRTC-licensed college radio station. Students learn and develop the skills to gather and cover stories in the community, broadcast live, create multimedia articles on 1069TheX.com, and share news on social media.
The curriculum for this journalism program includes training on how to pitch a story, interviewing and reporting, audio production and video skills, digital and social media content creation, Almost 107 podcasting, research, media law and ethics, writing for on-air and online platforms, newscasting and sportscasting, and storytelling across multiple platforms. Industry-experienced professors are dedicated to the success of their students and possess the news industry connections to help them embark on careers that matter.
Students will apply their skills through an internship during the final term to gain additional media experience, make professional contacts, and have the opportunity to secure full-time employment. The skills acquired in this multimedia journalism program extend into communications work and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Fanshawe College is the first and only educational institution to receive the RTDNA Bill Hutton Award of Excellence for its contributions to the advancement of broadcast journalism in Canada. Dozens of RTDNF scholarships have been awarded to journalism students for their exemplary work in the program. Graduates go on to enjoy successful professional careers in radio, television, and digital news.
