‘Tis the season for final exams across all university, college and high school campuses. While you may be experiencing some feelings of stress and anxiety, you are not the only one. Many are putting themselves through all-nighters and are drinking bottomless cups of coffee. It probably doesn’t help that your social life is on pause at the moment.
The silver lining? Well, the holidays are just around the corner. Soon you’ll be able to treat yourself to as much sleep, travel and gatherings as you can fit into an entire week! Something great to look forward to. That being said, there are multiple ways to keep your spirits high and push through this exam season.
Here are some impactful tips to get you through this year’s exam season.
Possibly the most important tip we can give you. If you’re organized, you’ll reduce your stress levels significantly. Write things down — whether it’s on a sticky note, a calendar or in your planner. As you begin to gain more information about each of your exams, such as time and location, make note.
Even if your professor shares details on what you may find on the exam, write it down. There’s nothing worse than missing out on key details. In addition, when you write things down, it’s much easier to visualize your daily study schedule. Allocate a certain amount of study time for each course. When it’s over, you can cross it off like you would on a grocery list.
Give yourself some type of incentive when studying. This can be time to see friends, a movie, a night out — whatever it is, give yourself a reward for working so hard. It may even be something as simple as a short study break! By giving yourself such rewards, you are motivating yourself to keep going. Incentives also keep things exciting as you’re giving yourself something to look forward to after you reach certain goals or complete an exam.
Study with friends
Similar to incentives, studying with friends can (oddly enough) make exam season fun. In fact, it can be very motivating discussing course topics with others. It also helps you remember key information. You learn a lot when talking with others, perhaps things you didn’t already know or understand previously.
Finally, studying with friends keeps you focused. However, be careful when studying with friends as it may be distracting. This depends entirely on your friend group. If you are discussing what you’ll be doing after exams rather than what’s on the expected exam, you might consider choosing another group to study with, or studying on your own.
Sleep, sleep, sleep
Don’t forget to take good care of yourself. By getting a good night’s rest, you’re allowing your body to refuel for the next day. If you skip out on sleep, you’ll begin to feel exhausted and will burn out quickly, which will pose a negative impact on your studies. Let your mind rest so it can retain more information when you begin to study again later. Sleep boosts your productivity levels which is necessary to make it through exam season.
It’s easy to get distracted and to procrastinate. We know, you don’t want to study. In fact, you want to do anything else but study. Unfortunately there’s no getting around this one, you’re going to have to do it. The more you focus on the task at hand, the more you can celebrate your little victories. It’s easy to lose motivation when certain friends end their exams sooner than you. If this is the case, forget what others are doing and focus on what you’re doing. Keep your eye on the prize (a good mark)! It will all be over sooner than you know it.
Either way you put it, exams aren’t fun. But you can do them abroad which makes things a little more exciting!
