Students will build on their successes in the Bachelor of Science by completing Honours to enhance essential employability skills or take their first step to a career in research, academia and beyond.
Mentored by expert staff from La Trobe's wide range of active research labs, students will develop a variety of scientific techniques by conducting their own research project. To complement their research, essential laboratory, scientific communication and presentation skills established during their undergraduate degree will be consolidated through workshops and exercises. Students will also be exposed to leading edge methodologies as part of a competitive research team.
Honours gives students the opportunity to specialize in the following disciplines:
- Agriculture (Melbourne Campus)
- Biochemistry (Melbourne Campus)
- Botany (Melbourne Campus)
- Chemistry (Melbourne Campus)
- Computer science (Melbourne Campus)
- Ecology, environment and evolution (Albury/Wodonga and Melbourne Campus)
- Environmental geoscience (Melbourne Campus)
- Genetics (Melbourne Campus)
- Mathematics (Melbourne Campus)
- Microbiology (Melbourne Campus)
- Physics (Melbourne Campus)
- Statistics (Melbourne Campus)
The Bendigo campus offers projects in biochemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, physics, chemistry and environmental science.
By completing Honours, students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge in their field and, through their professional behaviors, the values that shape the work of a professional scientist. Students will also have advanced skills in designing and successfully implementing scientific investigations, analyzing and interpreting data and presenting their findings to scientific audiences. They will also gain an edge in an increasingly competitive job market, have the opportunity to advance to further coursework or research at Master's level or, for high achievers, direct entry into a PhD.
