Students can examine the characteristics of human and physical features on Earth and the processes that shape them. They will focus on human geography and explore patterns of migration, travel behavior, health, food systems, urban development and sustainability. Students can learn methods and technologies relevant to geography, including global positioning systems, spatial analyses, crewless aerial vehicles data collection, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing.
In Wilfrid Laurier University's Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography program, students will focus on the areas of human or physical geography using social and natural science techniques to examine patterns in space and in time. They will learn to think critically about complex issues in areas such as urban geography, migration, health and food systems, river systems, coastal systems and the atmosphere as impacted by human activity.
In a BA focusing on Human Geography, students will discover cultural and social dimensions of how people use the world, issues of population change and mobility, and how human behavior affects the environment. They will explore processes of urbanization, transportation and energy use, trends in human developments and sustainability, and patterns of migration. In a BA focusing on Physical Geography, students will discover how the surface of planet changes in response to variations in driving forces like climate change. They will explore how processes in the natural environment function and how human activity can affect or change these.
The program introduces students to all the main aspects of geography in their first and second years, so that in their third and fourth years they will have the flexibility to specialize in their area of interest and develop advanced skills in research methods and techniques.
