A University of Hertfordshire research degree is an internationally recognised qualification that signifies high levels of achievement in research. It fosters extensive subject expertise and independent research skills, developed over an extended period depending on the level of the award.
Students undertake a research project for the duration of the degree, under the supervision and guidance of two or more academic staff members. The supervisory team provides support in selecting a research topic and throughout the research process. In addition, students benefit from participation in the Researcher Development Programme, which helps develop research skills relevant to their field of study.
The degree is assessed solely on the final research output, which takes the form of a substantial written submission that must be defended in a viva. Throughout the programme, students are offered opportunities to present their work at major conferences and to publish in refereed research journals.
A Masters by Research is not a taught course. Students are expected to take the initiative in their learning and development by seeking out opportunities offered by the University. Supervisors assist and support students throughout their studies.
The Masters by Research programme may be undertaken on either a full- or part-time basis. The University endeavours to provide a supportive research and learning environment, offering flexible supervision to enhance the student experience and help students make the most of their research journey.
Each supervision team comprises individuals with subject expertise and relevant supervisory experience.
