About Master of Arts (Honours) - French and English Language (QR31)

French is considered a major world language and is spoken in various regions across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The joint honors program being offered provides individuals with the opportunity to study French within its global cultural context, while also exploring the evolution of the English language over time.

By combining the study of languages from both a linguistic and cultural perspective, individuals are able to showcase their strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and their openness to different cultures and ideas. These qualities are highly valued by employers as they demonstrate intercultural competence.

Throughout the program, students will have the chance to develop a near-native fluency in French, a widely-spoken modern language, while also gaining a comprehensive cultural education that is highly regarded by potential employers.

The program will delve into various aspects of French culture, including Francophone literature and cinema, political history, social movements, and philosophical ideas.

Additionally, the English language, with its well-documented history of over 1,000 years, will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to trace the changes in the English language through written materials ranging from medieval manuscripts to text messages, as well as through recorded spoken English. The studies will focus on enhancing knowledge and understanding in areas such as the principles of theoretical linguistics, language acquisition, regional and social language variations, particularly within the English language, and various methods of communication.
