About Master of Speech Pathology (073116F)

Speech Pathologists provide valuable assistance to people with a wide range of communication needs, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, non-verbal communication, fluency and voice. They also help individuals with swallowing and eating needs to enhance their health, wellbeing and participation in everyday life. As awareness of the importance of communication and swallowing continues to grow, the demand for speech pathologists is expected to increase both locally and abroad.

La Trobe's Master of Speech Pathology gives students the knowledge and skills to help people realise their communication and swallowing potential. They will learn how to observe communication and mealtimes in everyday settings, conduct assessments, interpret clinical data and develop interventions. They'll also gain hands-on experience working with a range of individual clients.

As students learn, they'll take part in clinical workshops, guided demonstration sessions and simulation activities. They'll also work with service providers to help people with communication and swallowing needs participate and feel included in their community.

Students graduate ready to help people live their best lives.

Students will learn:

  • Speech pathology practice
    • Explore the roles and functions of speech pathologists and how to optimise communication and swallowing in a variety of social and clinical contexts.
  • Assessment of communication and swallowing
    • Gain theoretical and practical experience in conducting and interpreting speech pathology assessments.
  • Therapeutic intervention and management
    • Discover how to use assessment information, clinical experience and client observation to formulate intervention and management strategies in partnership with others.
  • Clinical management
    • Develop clinical and workplace skills by undertaking placements in a range of community health, school, hospital and private practice settings.
