La Trobe University's Master of Cybersecurity prepares students for a successful career in this fast-growing field, whether they have an IT background or not.
The degree has been carefully designed by industry leaders to first give students a strong foundation in cybersecurity, then invite them to specialize in either computer science, business operations or artificial intelligence.
Students can build fundamental skills in system design, implementation, testing and documentation. They can develop technical expertise in pen testing, block-chain and cyber forensics, and get hands-on experience applying their knowledge in La Trobe University's state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless labs. Students will also get to hone their networking skills in the university's CISCO networking and security labs.
Cybersecurity is about so much more than just technology. This degree explores the psychology of hacking and cybercrime, the legal and ethical frameworks students will be working within, and approaches to governance and risk management.
Students can begin building their career while they study. Industry-based learning opportunities embedded throughout this degree give them the change to not only build practical experience, but also start developing their professional network. Students will work on a real industry project alongside La Trobe University's industry partners, undertake a professional placement, or, if they are working towards a research career, complete a thesis on emerging topics in cybersecurity.
Early exit points mean that every part of the degree contributes to students' future career. They can exit after six months with a Graduate Certificate in Information Technology Fundamentals, or after one year with a Graduate Diploma in Cybersecurity.
Students will learn:
- Cybersecurity fundamentals - Explore the aims, methods and outcomes of cybersecurity practice.
- Ethical hacking and defense - Learn techniques for evaluating the security of network configurations and defending against network-based threats.
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning - Learn artificial intelligence-based cyber resilience and attack detection as well as deep learning-based cyber analytics.
- Cyber governance and risk management - Learn the frameworks for cybersecurity governance based on an understanding of business strategy and risk appetite.
- Secure programming - Learn a procedural language. Identify and analyze common coding practices that can avoid security vulnerabilities.
The qualification awarded on graduation is recognized in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
