Program Description
On the Pure Mathematics and Statistics degree at Aberystwyth University students will study mathematical concepts and the identification and analysis of shapes and patterns combined with data collation and calculation. They will learn how to solve problems and develop theories within mathematics, whilst acquiring a firm understanding of the techniques of collection, classification, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data. Statistics uses mathematical analysis, experiments and quantified models to evaluate hypotheses or analyse real-world problems. Suitably qualified statisticians are needed to process the enormous quantities of data generated by modern society, evaluate patterns within the data, and use those to inform decision making and strategy planning.
The first two years of the Pure Mathematics and Statistics course give a broad introduction to important areas of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics and mathematical analysis. They will be able to specialise in the final year and take advantage of expertise by choosing from a wide range of optional modules based on their own interests.
