About Bachelor of Science - Mathematics (Optional Co-op)

Mathematics is a prominent player in today's technologically advanced society. In fact, many math majors do not plan to become "professional mathematicians," but realize that quantitative reasoning is a valuable asset in a number of careers. Math majors learn computational and problem-solving skills, abstract reasoning, the ability to conjecture, formulate, critique, and justify assertions, and the ability to communicate and write in a clear and concise manner. Project work also gives them teamwork experience.
A math degree prepares students for a career in business, industry, government, medicine, or law. Many math graduates pursue careers as physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, computer scientists, linguists, lawyers, doctors, and managers. Prospects are also good for well-qualified students to obtain support for graduate studies in mathematics and mathematics education.

Wilkes' Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees focus on one of two tracks:
  • The Standard Track is a traditional mathematics curriculum that emphasizes a broad, primarily theoretical approach. It is useful to students who want to continue studies in graduate school or pursue careers in disciplines such as physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, or engineering.
  • The Computational Mathematics Track offers students with a strong interest in both mathematics and computer science the opportunity to explore the relationships between the two fields. Computational Mathematics is increasingly important in all fields of sciences, especially such fields as oil and gas exploration.
