About Bachelor of Applied Science - Integrated Elementary and Special Education

University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Integrated Elementary and Special Education (IESE) qualifies students to apply for Minnesota state licensure to teach K-6 general elementary education and K-12 special education in the areas of learning disabilities, emotional behavior disorders, autism spectrum, developmental cognitive delay, and other health impairments within the mild to moderate range.

This multi-categorical special education license is called Academic and Behavioral Strategist (ABS). Graduates receive a broad liberal and professional education. The program focuses on the structure of the various disciplines: the child as a learner, the learning environment, diverse learners, teaching strategies in practicum settings, and the student teaching experience in both elementary and special education settings.

  • Graduates qualify for licensure in K-6 Elementary Education and K-12 Academic & Behavioral Strategist Special Education
  • Emphasis on theory and teaching strategies in literacy and language arts; math; social studies; science; classroom and behavior management; and assessment and academic intervention
  • Students have more than 300 hours of structured and supervised work in area classrooms before they begin student teaching
  • Coursework focused on teaching about and with American Indians and other diverse populations to teach students how to work well with all learners and improve their understanding of social justice concepts

  • Effective lesson planning that addresses the varying needs of children in regular and special education settings

Career Possibilities

Entry-level positions include Elementary Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, and Tutoring Services.  Advanced degree positions include Dean of Students, Principal, Academic Advisor, School Counselor, and Superintendent.
