About Bachelor of Applied Science - Teaching Earth and Space Science
University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) Bachelors of Applied Sciences (B.A.Sc.) degree in Teaching Earth and Space Science prepares students to teach General Science (grades 5-8) and Earth & Space Science (grades 9-12). The major aligns to the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) standards for General Science in grades 5-8 and Earth & Space Sciences in grades 9-12 in Minnesota. The B.A.Sc. in Teaching Earth and Space Sciences is offered by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of Geological Sciences. This major is for students who plan to teach all science areas in grades 5 through 8 and teach earth and space sciences in grades 9 through 12.
Overview:
- Graduates will be eligible for MN licensure in general science grades 5-8 in addition to one of the following: Teaching Life Science 9-12, Teaching Earth & Space Science 9-12, Teaching Physics 9-12, or Teaching Chemistry 9-12
- Graduates are highly sought after for their in-depth understanding of science, teaching, and technology
- Field-based program with 40+ weeks of opportunities to be immersed in multiple classrooms
- Focused coursework on teaching about and with American Indians, as well as the role of diversity in American education; candidates develop an understanding of working with all learners
- Courses are rooted in current best practices that will prepare graduates to help students discover the world around them through inquiry and exploration

- Effective lesson plan design and instruction
- Oral and written communication skills
- Ability to create instruction opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities
- Use data to inform and improve instruction and programs
