About Bachelor of Applied Arts - Teaching German

University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) Bachelor of Applied Arts (B.A.A.) in teaching French, German, or Spanish is offered through the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Students are fully immersed in the language they will teach through coursework, volunteering in the Duluth community, and studying abroad.

Teaching German:

The B.A.A. degree in teaching German prepares students to teach German (Grades K-12). The major aligns to the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) standards for German in grades K-12 in Minnesota. The B.A.A. in teaching German is offered through the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. This major prepares students to teach German from kindergarten through grade 12. 

Note: Students pursuing both the German Studies BA and Teaching German BAA degrees must satisfactorily complete 12 non-overlapping upper division credits of German electives beyond the requirements for both degrees.The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) offers a variety of content areas for specialization. Classes include a combination of specific content areas and teacher education coursework. Within the teacher education program, students have hands-on exposure to classrooms through volunteer experiences, observation, and student teaching.

  • Create instruction opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities.

Career Possibilities

Entry level positions include elementary, middle or high school teacher, translator, interpreter.  Advanced degree positions include Dean of Students, Principal, School Counselor, Superintendent.
