Bachelor of Applied Arts - Teaching French

University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) Bachelor of Applied Arts (B.A.A.) in teaching French, German, or Spanish is offered through the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Students are fully immersed in the language they will teach through coursework, volunteering in the Duluth community, and studying abroad.

Teaching French:

The B.A.A. degree in teaching French prepares students to teach French (Grades K-12). The major aligns to the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) standards for French in grades K-12 in Minnesota. The B.A.A. in teaching French is offered through the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. This major prepares students for licensure as a French teacher from kindergarten through grade 12. NOTE: Students pursuing both the French Studies BA and Teaching French BAA must satisfactorily complete 12 non-overlapping upper division credits of French electives beyond the requirements for both degrees.

The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) offers a variety of content areas for specialization. Classes include a combination of specific content areas and teacher education coursework. Within the teacher education program, students have hands-on exposure to classrooms through volunteer experiences, observation, and student teaching.

Career Possibilities

Entry level positions include elementary, middle or high school teacher, translator, interpreter.  Advanced degree positions include Dean of Students, Principal, School Counselor, Superintendent.
