Political Science is the study of governments, public policies and political behaviors. Political Science will appeal to students who are excited about exploring the background to current events, the nature and use of power and how decisions are made that impact on wider society. For students who are interested in having an in-depth knowledge of public affairs, developing critical and much sought after research skills and if their career interests lie in journalism, public service, teaching, public policy, international organization and/or business then Political Science may be for them.
The two disciplines have been associated through the sub-fields of political geography, which covers geographical differences in voting patterns, for example, and through geo-politics which examines how the great powers influence other parts of the planet.
In the context of globalization, interdisciplinary understandings of socio-environmental issues are becoming increasing key to solving the problems of the future such as political instability in parts of the developing world as a result of climate change.
Geography is a discipline inherently suited to addressing current and future societal challenges. It asks questions about how and why human, physical, and environmental phenomena vary across space and time. Geography is intrinsically interdisciplinary and, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, geographers are well placed to bring their understanding and skills to bear on social and environmental issues.
Today, geographical knowledge and experience are more important than ever, helping us to understand a dynamic and rapidly changing world. Trinity College Dublin’s staff are world leaders in their chosen field and bring that expertise to their teaching. Students will get to study in the classroom and the field, and undertake independent research in Ireland, overseas and even on Mars.
