About Master of Arts (Honours) - German and Philosophy (RV25)

German thought has had a profound impact on philosophy, culture, and science. The German-speaking world has produced many influential European thinkers, including Arendt, Hegel, Leibnitz, and Wittgenstein.

The programme offers intensive language training and includes a year abroad. The courses provide opportunities to develop professional skills in various aspects of German, such as writing, speaking, presenting, and translating.

Students will also explore German-language literature, film, and theatre, examining them within the historical and political contexts from the eighteenth century to the present.

The Philosophy department at Edinburgh University has a strong historical connection. Notable former students include Adam Ferguson and Sir William Hamilton.

Studying Philosophy will enable students to acquire knowledge and skills in argumentation, critical inquiry, reasoning, and clarity of expression.
