About Master of Arts (Honours) - Chinese and French (BR31)

The Master of Arts in Chinese and French program, students will have the opportunity to study two major world languages within the context of the histories, literatures, and societies of the various countries in which they are spoken.

Chinese and French, with their combined native speaker population of over two billion, serve as gateways to a diverse range of cultures across Europe, Africa, North America, and East Asia.

Edinburgh University stands out as the sole institution in Scotland that offers both single and joint honors undergraduate programs in Chinese. While the university specializes in teaching students who have little to no prior knowledge of the language, it also welcomes those who already possess some experience in studying Chinese.

By choosing to study with us, students will develop advanced proficiency in the Chinese language. Additionally, they will acquire specialized knowledge about mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and associated diasporas in various historical and contemporary contexts. The University of Edinburgh courses delve into topics such as history, literature, culture, politics, and international relations.

Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to attain near-native fluency in the French language while exploring various aspects of Francophone culture, including literature, cinema, political history, social movements, and philosophical ideas.
