Bachelor of Science - Physical Education PK-12:

The Department of Health and Movement Sciences offers nationally recognized programs in Athletic Training, Human Performance, Physical Education, Respiratory Care and/or School Health Education. Career options in the fitness and health industry (e.g., in corporate wellness, fitness training, clinical exercise physiology, human performance) are growing; Southern Connecticut State University’s graduates have gone on to positively contribute to the health status and wellness-based lifestyles of different segments of the population, from young children to the elderly.

The Bachelors degree program in Physical Education is designed to prepare students to teach physical education in grades Pre-K to 12. Successful completion of this program fulfills the academic requirements of the Connecticut initial educator certificate for preK-12 physical education. Graduates are employed in public and private schools, and related fields in physical fitness, coaching, outdoor recreation and physical activity leadership.

The Physical Education Teacher Preparation program is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and fulfills all standards established by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America). Additional certification to teach school health education is available as an option for students.

Master of Science - School Health Education - Accelerated:

Southern Connecticut State University’s unique Master of Science in School Health Education emphasizes the importance of creating an environment in which students are most likely to choose healthy behaviors that support academic success and positive life outcomes. Graduates of the program gain the skills and knowledge needed to lead, coordinate, deliver, and advocate for school health education programs for children and youth in grades pre-K through 12.

The B.S. in Physical Education (Concentration: PreK-12 Teacher Certification and School Health Education MS Accelerated Pathway) provides high-achieving students with the opportunity to complete foundational graduate coursework during their senior year of undergraduate study in order to accelerate graduate degree completion. This competitive program allows admitted students the opportunity to complete both their bachelor's degree and the M.S. in School Health Education (Accelerated Pathway Concentration) in five years at Southern Connecticut State University.
