The Department of Mathematics offers degrees tailored to individual student needs. At the undergraduate level, Pittsburg State University offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with three emphases. They offer two teaching emphases. The 5-8 emphasis prepares the recipient for licensure at the late childhood through early adolescence (middle school) level. The 6-12 emphasis prepares the recipient for licensure at the early adolescence through late adolescence (high school) level.
The Teaching, Grades 5-8 emphasis requires internship opportunities throughout the program. This includes an introductory exploration in Education course during the freshman or sophomore year followed by a semester long part-time internship culminating in a full-time semester of student teaching with a master teacher.
The department maintains relationships with their graduates and actuarial employers to foster internship opportunities for students pursuing the actuarial emphasis.
The department encourages student research at all levels by providing one-on-one research opportunities with faculty members and providing travel support for students to attend and present research at a variety of mathematics conferences.
