2-Term Pathway - Pre-Master's in Social Sciences and Law - Continue to Master of Arts - Language and Linguistics

This program will prepare students for entry to a postgraduate degree in a wide range of subjects at Lancaster University, including law, design and a world top 10 linguistics program (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

If students want to immerse themselves in the study of language and linguistics, Lancaster is the place for them. With over 40 members of staff specialising in different areas, Lancaster is one of the largest departments in the UK.

Immersed in research

The research carried out in this area is extremely diverse – and so is this course. From studying the bilingual mind to analysing language, students will be helped to expand their expertise. At the same time, they’ll hone their research skills and become confident handling large amounts of data.

With research groups in corpus studies, discourse studies, language testing, and more, there are plenty of opportunities to advance knowledge in these theoretical and applied fields. As part of the community, students will also develop friendly networks with other students who share their academic interests.

There is only one core module for this course, so students can completely tailor the programme to their interests. Lancaster offers optional modules around different linguistic and language themes:

• Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics
• Language and Cognition
• Language in Use/Language in Society
• (Forensic) Speech Science and Technology
• Language, Variation and Change
• Language Learning and Teaching

Completing a dissertation is a vital part of the course. Students will pick an area that interests them while developing skills that will be useful throughout their career. One could explore bilingualism in the specialist Phonetics Lab. Or perhaps they’ll carry out psycholinguistics research in the Perception and Learning Lab and our Eye-Tracking Lab.
