About 1-Term Pathway - International Incorporated Master's (IIM) - Continue to Master of Science - Civil Engineering with Marine Renewable Energy
The Pre-Masters program is designed for students who do not qualify for direct entry to a postgraduate degree at the University of Dundee. This may be due to the grades achieved in their undergraduate degree, their current qualifications not being equivalent to a UK undergraduate degree, or a desire to improve their academic and English language skills.
The Pre-Masters course will equip students with the advanced skills necessary to complete their postgraduate study at the University of Dundee. They can choose to study over one or two terms, depending on their academic qualifications and English language level. The one-term option offers a fast track route to their chosen degree course and is studied over three months. The two-term option is studied over six months and provides additional academic English and subject-related support.
Civil Engineering with Marine Renewable Energy
Civil engineering is an engineering discipline that focuses on the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure that comprises modern society. This includes a wide range of projects such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water supply systems. Marine renewable energy involves harnessing power from ocean resources, such as tides, waves, and currents, providing sustainable, clean electricity by capturing energy generated by natural movements in the sea.
Civil engineering with a focus on marine renewable energy integrates the principles of civil engineering with the exploration and utilization of renewable energy derived from marine sources. This specialized field involves designing and developing structures and systems dedicated to harnessing energy from the sea, particularly through technologies that capture tidal and wave power.
In this course, students will study a range of subjects, including:
- Structural analysis and design
- Coastal engineering
- Geotechnical engineering
Additionally, students will have the opportunity to explore topics such as:
- Environmental considerations
- Project management
- The regulatory landscape specific to marine renewable energy projects
The interdisciplinary nature of this course equips students with the skills to address complex engineering issues at the intersection of civil engineering and marine renewable energy.
The specialized course will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by marine renewable energy, covering topics such as offshore wind farms, tidal and wave energy, and sustainable marine infrastructure.
In Semester 1, students will work on modules specific to marine renewable energy, alongside optional or conversion modules. In Semester 2, they will focus on core civil engineering modules and any remaining optional or conversion modules. Finally, students will complete an individual research project associated with an aspect of marine renewable energy.
The program also involves hands-on experiences in designing structures that are resilient to marine environments and optimizing renewable energy systems.
As part of this course, students will have the opportunity to access dedicated laboratories and resources to enhance their hands-on learning and research. These facilities include:
- The University’s wave flumes and coastal simulator
- The Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling Facility
- The Scottish Marine and Renewables Test (SMART) Laboratory
