About Bachelor of Engineering - Mechanical Engineering (Honours) (with placement year)
Program Description
Develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a professional engineer by studying the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about all movable parts, helping prepare students for a career in one of the most diverse and versatile engineering fields.
Mechanical engineering touches virtually every aspect of modern life. It’s at the forefront of developing new technologies for a multitude of industries including transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics.
This course focuses on a range of topics including computer-aided design (CAD), thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials engineering and processing, and product development.
DMU teaching and content are influenced by their research in aerodynamics, fluid systems, transportation, manufacturing and sustainable development.
Students can study Mechanical Engineering either as a three-year BEng (Hons) programme, or a four-year integrated master’s MEng (Hons). At the end of year three, they have the option of graduating with a BEng (Hons) or continuing for a further year for a MEng (Hons), subject to meeting the progression requirements.
Key features
- Dual accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This fulfils the educational requirements for a Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc.
- 100% of Mechanical Engineering graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study ( Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education 2016-17) compared to a sector average of 94.6%.
- Study a range of topics including computer-aided design, thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials engineering and processing and fracture mechanics.
- Benefit from specialist facilities such as control and dynamics laboratories, mechanics and materials laboratories, engine test cell and Rohde and Schwarz embedded systems laboratories.
- Join DMU Racing and take part in Formula Student, an annual initiative set up by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers which challenges universities across the world to design, build and race a single-seat racing car.
- Graduates have opportunities to progress into careers across a range of fields, including aerospace, automotive, defence and energy, as well as work in the product manufacturing and food and beverage industries.
