The backbone of the program is the symbiotic relationship of the Business School coursework, the Theatre Arts coursework, and the professional practicum. These three elements not only provide unique preparation to enter the field but allow the students to learn, refine, and apply their skills in three different environments.
- They combine for-profit skills of an MBA with the specific challenges of running a non-profit theater and the broader aspirational context of an MFA.

- Buttressing seminar-based learning with a rigorous practicum endows students with the roles, responsibilities, and context of running a fully functional theater company, California Repertory Company (Cal Rep).
