The Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering at Abertay University provides students with cutting-edge knowledge and technical skills essential for modern geotechnical engineering practice. Whether aiming to specialise in foundation design, offshore engineering, or sustainable ground engineering solutions, this programme offers a comprehensive pathway to expertise in this vital field.
Advanced Technical Focus
Students will gain expertise in advanced site investigation techniques, geotechnical engineering design, and offshore engineering. The programme emphasises practical application through the use of industry-standard software and analytical tools, including finite element analysis. Learners will have the opportunity to collect and analyse data through fieldwork using the Pagani TG63-150 Cone Penetration Testing apparatus—an advanced piece of equipment unique to Abertay in Scotland, providing a distinctive experience in ground investigation techniques.
Each student will complete an individual research project supervised by experts in their chosen area of specialisation.
Industry-Connected Learning
Participants will benefit from Abertay’s extensive industry connections and be taught by an academic team with over 60 years of experience in engineering education. The university’s strong ties with industry partners ensure the programme remains at the forefront of geotechnical engineering practice. Additionally, Abertay's well-established research profile in civil and environmental engineering offers students exposure to the latest innovations and developments in the field.
Graduates will acquire the advanced skills and professional expertise required to excel in senior geotechnical engineering roles. Whether pursuing specialisation or career advancement, this programme serves as a robust foundation for future success.
Industry Placement
All students are initially registered on the MSc Geotechnical Engineering, which includes a research project. However, they will have the opportunity to apply for an industrial placement as an alternative to the research project. Placements are subject to availability and awarded on a competitive basis following an application and interview process with the placement provider. Successful applicants will be transferred to the MSc Geotechnical Engineering with Industrial Practice.
