About Master of Science - Applied Mathematics
Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s master’s in Applied Mathematics prepares students to leverage mathematics in solving complex problems across a diverse array of fields. The program equips students with expertise in the mathematical applications most in demand today, enabling them to address challenges in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry.
The highly selective program admits only a small number of students each year, ensuring that class sizes remain intimate and that students benefit from personalized interactions with expert faculty researchers and mentors. Students can choose to study on a part-time or full-time basis, allowing the program to be tailored to individual interests and career ambitions.
Through advanced coursework, students develop a broad foundational knowledge in mathematics, with a focus on numerical methods and scientific computation, mathematical modeling, discrete mathematics, materials science, and optimization. Elective coursework allows students to specialize in areas of interest such as computer science, mechanical engineering, bioinformatics, and data science.
The program culminates in a research-based thesis or project, which can be conducted in collaboration with one of WPI’s industry partners.
