About Foundation Studies Program (Fast Track) - Arts (X0G:1) (0100809) + Bachelor of Music - Classical Composition (13O) (002715D)

Program Description

Foundation Studies Program (Fast Track) - Arts (X0G:1) (0100809):
The Foundation Studies program is a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or an equivalent. The program acts as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but who don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a 50% pass in all units, including English.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can enter one of the University of Tasmania’s undergraduate degree courses.

Bachelor of Music - Classical Composition (13O):

The island campus of Tasmania teaches students to embrace diversity, connections and ingenuity, leading to a rewarding future in music. The Bachelor of Music - Classical Composition degree is built around a Music Practice major, in which students develop their individual skills in a specialisation of their choice:

  • Classical Performance
  • Jazz and Popular Music Performance
  • Composition
  • Commercial Music Creation
  • Music Technology
  • Songwriter

Students have the unique option to combine two specialisations, or two different instruments within a single specialisation, with the Dual Practice major.

Tasmania provides a unique backdrop for exploring both current and historical cultural contexts of music. Students can discover how place, spectacle, politics and the future borrow from and influence music, letting their interests drive the creation of new works and projects. To help students realise ideas and prepare them for the ever-changing musical landscape, students can pick up essential skills in recording, digital production, arranging, project management and an awareness of the music industry.

It all happens from the new home of music in Hobart at the Hedberg. Leverage the building’s groundbreaking technical capability and generous studio spaces to improve the scale and complexity of students work. Sit on a professional multi-room recording session, discover how variable acoustics are used as a compositional tool, or explore the production workflow of a visiting producer in a masterclass.

From year one, students will take part in a vibrant public concert program across the Hedberg’s incredible venues and spaces — and outside in Tasmania’s thriving arts scene. From the Conservatorium Orchestra and Big Band, to the Experimental Music Ensemble and ARIA-award nominated Southern Gospel Choir, students can perform in a range of ensembles which celebrate the diversity of music.

Through access to exclusive creative collaborations with Fine Arts, Media, and Theatre and Performance, students will build close creative networks, test working relationships, and leverage their accomplishments to generate future opportunities. It allows students to work with left-field festivals, create scores for diverse creative projects and inspires on a field trip overseas.
