About Integrated Master of Science - Medicinal and Biological Chemistry (Industrial Year) (CF71)

Chemistry plays a significant role in society as it is crucial for the development of drugs, the creation of vaccines, and the treatment of illnesses. The interplay between chemistry and biology is explored by students in order to gain an understanding of human disease and drug design. The course encompasses core chemistry, as well as modules in physiology and pharmacology. Within these modules, students learn about drug delivery, metabolism and targeting, drug structures and toxicities, and cancer agents.

Undergraduate masters-level students on this course have the opportunity to spend a year in year three working in a research laboratory of a major chemical company. During this time, they are employed and contribute to a research project. Additionally, they complete three distance learning theory modules. Previous students on placement have been placed at esteemed companies such as AstraZeneca, Croda, GlaxoSmithKline, Lubrizol, and Sygnature.

The fourth year of the course includes masters-level modules and a major research project. Students have the freedom to choose their own project topic from a wide range of areas in chemistry, depending on their interests or career aspirations. They benefit from the active research and up-to-date knowledge of the university's research groups, as well as access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

This course equips students with the necessary skills for a variety of careers and prepares them for the industry. Graduates from this program have gone on to work in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and drink, and energy. In addition to technical knowledge, students also develop their written and oral communication skills, as well as transferable skills like problem-solving, numeracy, and data analysis. The University of Nottingham is highly regarded by leading employers, making it the second-most targeted university in the UK according to High Fliers' Graduate Market in 2023.
