About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Philosophy (V500)

Philosophy can be transformative. They can do it for its own sake as well as for its ability to shape lives, institutions, and society.

They might be full of curiosity and wonder, anger and injustice, confusion or a desire to make sense of their self and the world. Philosophy covers all these bases. And more.

The first year introduces they to the essentials of ethics, reasoning and logic while also expanding their sense of what philosophy can do. They explore Western philosophies from ancient Greece onwards as well as world traditions. We’ll also teach them how to apply philosophy to contemporary issues.

Extensive module choice
In later years they're free to choose from our unusually wide range of optional topics.

They can:
explore crime and justice, race and gender, politics and theology
examine emerging areas like environmental and social philosophy
investigate global philosophical traditions - Western, Indian and Chinese
take our distinctive modules on sex, illness, recreation, and mental health
Looking to their future

Philosophy trains them to argue persuasively and think deeply. Philosophy at Nottingham doesn't stop there. We also want them to live good lives and have good jobs. Our unique Communicating Philosophy module lets them work with professionals such as lawyers and journalists and see how they can apply their new philosophical skills to a range of careers. There's also plenty of opportunities to get practical work experience.
