About Bachelor of Science - Genetics (C400)

Geneticists study the basis of life, helping solve some of the major challenges facing as a species, including emerging human diseases and threats to wildlife populations. Here student will be taught by academics who are actively researching these problems. This is a subject of importance to all areas of biology, from evolution to medicine.

This courses are flexible, adapting to their evolving needs: with a wide array of options in second and third year, they can specialize in the genetics of disease, microbial genetics, or evolutionary biology. It’s also possible to switch to an integrated master's course (MSci) from a BSc course, depending on their grades in the second year.

Practical work

They will gain experience in a range of laboratory and data analysis techniques from their first semester. Examples of genetics practical’s include:

Year 1 – Mapping gene locations
Year 2 – Genetic manipulation and genome engineering
Year 3 – Unravelling the complexity of gene expression during cell differentiation and development
In year three they will do a year-long research project guided by a member of academic staff, where we will train them in transferable and advanced research skills. Key areas of industry such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and agriculture rely on individuals with these skills.
