About Master of Education - Councelling
This degree is tailored for future master’s-level practitioners, such as school counselors or counseling therapists working in community agencies or private practice. The MEd in Counselling also provides the option of a combined research and practice-based degree, which can serve as a foundation for pursuing doctoral studies in counseling psychology.
It is important to note that the MEd in Counselling is not designed to qualify individuals for licensure as psychologists.
Counselors work with individuals, groups, and families to address a wide range of issues related to daily life and development, including:
- Career choice and adjustment
- Successfully making life transitions
- Functioning in interpersonal relationships
- Emotional and behavioral problems
Faculty members conduct research on topics such as:
- Career and vocational development
- Counseling processes
- Therapeutic relationships
- Growth psychology
- The practice of counseling and counseling psychology in Canada
The program offers two routes for students:
- MEd course route: 10 courses (33 credit hours), including a six-credit-hour practicum
- MEd thesis route: 10 courses plus a thesis (48 credit hours)
