About Bachelor of Arts - Philosophy

Program Description

Philosophy investigates many of the big questions of life: what is a human being? Are there such things as justice, beauty or God? What counts as knowledge?

Investigating these and other questions, such as the nature of time, the relation between body and mind, how good and bad is defined, is a conversation that draws from great thinkers-‐-‐past and present. This is a discipline that challenges everyone to think about these kinds of problems critically, creatively and systematically.

The UNB program encourages students to complicate and clarify the thought through close and critical reading of great thinkers, engaged discussion in seminar settings, and challenging writing opportunities through sustained writing-‐ mentoring. This provides a robust preparation for graduate study in philosophy and a superb foundation for other fields such as law, journalism, government, publishing, health professions, environmental policy, and business.

Hands-on learning:
  • Teaching/Research assistant opportunities for upper-level students
  • International exchange opportunities
  • Opportunities to attend undergraduate conferences and workshops throughout North America
  • Internships sponsored by the Faculty of Arts
  • Experience the student-run Hemlock Club which organizes debates, film discussions and a radio program
Skills students will acquire:
  • Build life-long abilities for critical, creative and systematic thinking
  • Strong reading and research skills
  • Develop arguments with clarity and depth
  • Formulate and solve problems
  • Develop strong written and oral communication skills
