The University of Massachusetts Boston's Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a diverse and engaging curriculum, with courses focusing on language, literary, cultural, and film studies. The well-rounded faculty, made up of prolific scholars and dedicated teachers, is committed to creating a strong community of language learners, critical thinkers, and responsible global citizens, who are well prepared for the professional demands of today’s global markets. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts in French.

A background in Modern Languages opens many doors for its graduates. The career paths some students have taken have led them in a variety of different directions.

Some graduates of the department have gone on to complete MA and PhD work and currently teach in high schools and colleges. Others work in fields like business, banking or travel where their expertise in language and culture is a definite asset. A few have become translators or interpreters, and some have discovered unexpected career paths: professional chef and clothing designer, for instance.

Many students combine a language major with majors in business, economics and anthropology.
