Program Description
The Criminal Justice and Public Policy program is designed to provide students seeking a career in the criminal justice system, or planning to pursue an advanced degree with a knowledge base that will enable them to pursue their career objectives. The program offers a unique blend of sociological courses dealing with the criminal justice system as well as courses in political science dealing with public policy formulation and implementation, emphasizing the intersection of law, public policy and social and criminal justice. It also provides students with the conceptual and methodological tools needed for further study.
Students enrolled in the program have a variety of career options when they graduate. They may choose law enforcement, probation/parole and corrections work which directly relate to the criminology portion of the program. Some may also choose to further their studies with a post-degree forensics program, social work, addictions counselling, law school or graduate work in criminology. For those students interested in public policy, there are a variety of opportunities as policy analysts in government, non-profit groups or industry. Others may choose to go on to law school or pursue a graduate degree in political science, public administration or public policy.
