The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree covers areas such as structural mechanics, electrical circuits, fluids and powder dynamics, and thermodynamics. Through this course, students will be equipped for career as professional mechanical engineers in areas such as high-value manufacturing and the automotive and aerospace industries. A number of former students have also started their own companies or have gone on to further postgraduate study.
This undergraduate course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, indicating that it provides ideal preparation for aspiring professional engineers. Students will be taught by an experienced team which includes senior academics, professional practitioners with industry experience, lab technicians, and external experts who provide guest lectures on some modules. Besides, PhD researchers also offer lab support, which undergraduate students find very useful.
Seminars and workshops enable learners to discuss and develop their understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. They'll also be able to meet their personal tutor. Students go to a range of companies and organizations of varying sizes for their placements, including large multi-national firms, government agencies, the NHS and small to medium sized companies engaged in research, analytical services and manufacturing.
Previous students have worked in Eon, Dyson, ADEY, PS Analytical and E-liquids, GSK and NHS hospitals. Some have also taken IAESTE (British Council) placements to Brazil, Dubai and Poland.
