About Master of Arts by Research - Communications, PR and the Media (Professional)
This professional MA by Research adopts an active learning approach, with a strong emphasis on real-world application, creating a practical and professionally focused course for both international and home students.
Students learn through lectures delivered by industry experts and develop their knowledge through practical experiences such as group discussions, debates, role-playing, and working on professional briefs. The course is designed to be inclusive, encouraging integration and collaboration among students from diverse backgrounds.
The programme equips students with the knowledge, skills, and industry connections required to build a successful career in Public Relations (PR) and communications. Modules explore key topics such as influencer targeting, social media strategy, campaign planning, crisis communications, media relations, and strategic communications.
In addition, students gain practical skills in video and podcast production, copywriting, and editing using Adobe software. They learn how to apply the latest techniques in digital PR, social media, and multimedia to design and execute effective PR campaigns. The curriculum also covers the evolving role of artificial intelligence in content creation and its broader impact on the professional PR landscape.
The course is delivered by lecturers who are also practising PR professionals, ensuring students benefit from current industry insight. Guest speakers from leading organisations further enrich the learning experience and provide valuable networking opportunities.
While lectures and seminars form part of the teaching approach, students are also encouraged to engage in small communities of practice—collaborative groups based on shared interests or research methods. Peer review and feedback are integral, helping students develop reflective listening, critical evaluation, and a commitment to action.
With a strong emphasis on empirical research, the course culminates in an empirical research project that critically explores and applies theory to real-world issues. This final project enhances students' critical and analytical thinking and deepens their understanding within a global context.
Students are encouraged to embrace technology throughout their studies, which maximises engagement, supports the development of transferable skills, and enhances the overall learning experience.
The course is brought to life through live briefs, real-world case studies, staff research initiatives, industry connections, and a variety of guest speakers. Students build a portfolio of work ranging from communication strategies to multimedia content, creating a direct link to their future careers. Guest speakers have included representatives from Sport England, UCAS, BHM, Reach Plc, and numerous PR agencies.
