About 4-Term Pathway - International Year One in Economics - Continue to Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Management Economics (Placement Year)

Program Description

For students that completed high school with good grades but don’t qualify for entry to an undergraduate degree, they could study an International Year One, which combines university preparation with degree 1st year. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 2nd year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.

Students’ course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If the course is longer than 2 terms, they’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Management Economics

Unlike conventional management courses, at Essex students analyze the economics of a business or organization and investigate how they operate and behave.

Students develop their abilities in economics and gain confidence in applying them to organizational management, as well as receiving expert training in quantitative research methods. They gain a thorough understanding of how businesses function and develop their analytical, modelling and research skills through studying topics including:

  • Managing people and practices
  • Marketing
  • Monopoly power and regulation
  • Applying economic techniques to managing new technologies
  • The impact of business decisions on products, prices, and social welfare
The Department is rated consistently highly for student satisfaction and is top 5 in the UK for research, with over 90% of its research rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” (REF 2014).

Management economics gives students a valuable grounding in economics, with a particular focus on how companies work. It provides students with a greater understanding of how firms operate, teaching them how resources are allocated within a company, why a company is structured in a particular way, and how these structures affect the overall economy.

This ensures that students graduate having received a strong training in management economics.
