Program Description
For students who've finished high school but don’t meet the entry requirements for university, a Foundation Certificate can help them gain entry to an undergraduate degree. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 1st year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.
A student’s course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. Students taking a course longer than 2 terms, will take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.
Master of Letters - Drama and Scriptwriting
Studying theatre and drama at Essex enables students to examine some of the most influential play-texts ever written, and to be ready to take part in shaping the essential performances of tomorrow. This degree is a chance to unlock and explore their creativity. Students will develop as scriptwriters too, by learning with professional and award-winning dramatists. They will produce a varied portfolio of dramatic works, culminating in a full-length original play, which will enable them to hone and develop their own unique voice.
On the four-year MLitSt Drama and Scriptwriting, students will be part of an interdisciplinary department where literary critics work alongside practicing poets, dramatists, film-makers, novelists and journalists.
Students have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of optional modules across different topics and areas of specialisation, including;
- Dramatic literature from Ancient Greek tragedy and Shakespeare, to modern plays from around the world
- Contemporary playwriting and devising techniques
- Staging political ideas, human rights and social justice issues
- Gender, identity, orientation and sexual politics on stage
- Creating Applied Theatre in educational and community contexts
- Emergent trends in interactive performance-making and audience participation
In their fourth year, as post-graduate students, they will be able to choose from the following masters level modules in drama and scriptwriting;
- The principles of dramatic structure and scene construction
- Techniques for working as a playwright with youth and community groups
- The origins and possibilities of poetic theatre and verse drama
- Options for poetic practice or novel-writing
- Radio drama
The Department is ranked first in the UK for drama in the Guardian University Guide 2020 and top 5 for dance, drama and cinematics in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.
