Bachelor of Science (with Honours) - Biomedical Science with a Placement Year in NHS

NHS Biomedical Scientists have been crucial in combating human disease, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our BSc in Biomedical Science equips student to address current challenges in the field. They will study advanced human health and disease and learn the latest techniques for medical NHS laboratories.

We offer two degree programs: Biomedicine (BSc hons), focused on biomedical research and its clinical application, and Biomedical Science (BSc hons), aimed at training future Biomedical Scientists for NHS labs. The first-year curriculum is identical for both, allowing them to decide on their specialization by the end of the year. For instance, if they start with Biomedical Science, they can switch to Biomedicine later, aligning their studies with there interests and career goals.

UEA is located in the Norwich Research Park (NRP), a premier biomedical research environment. In partnership with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and other NHS Trusts, we've created an innovative degree program that deepens your understanding of disease processes through laboratory investigation for better diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.

An optional placement in a partnering NHS Trust laboratory will occur between the end of the second year and the start of the final year. The NHS module allows completion of the IBMS training portfolio and progression towards HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist. This practice-based module involves working as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist in an IBMS approved NHS Medical Laboratory, learning from qualified Biomedical Scientists. NHS training will be supported by online access to recorded materials on professional practice, offering guidance on meeting the threshold competencies for HCPC registration.
