About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Liberal Arts and Sciences (Y001)

The prestigious undergraduate Liberal Arts and Sciences degree course is designed for talented students who want to study Liberal Arts, a variety of Sciences, or a mix of both, at degree level.

Each student creates their own unique programme which can combine arts and/or sciences and/or social sciences. Students will typically centre their studies at University around one subject, their Major, which will serve as their specialism. This is then complemented with a variety of different subjects to give students an original portfolio of expertise. Every programme is unique to the student.

The exciting four-year degree programmes offer a rich extra-curricular experience to make students stand out in a competitive graduate market. Students could broaden their global potential through the Year Abroad studying at one of a choice of over 250 institutions. Or carry out a project-based placement with a community organisation closer to home for the new Year in Civic Leadership option. Another option is the Year in Computer Science that allows students from non-computing disciplines to gain in-depth knowledge of computing and to enhance work-based skills. In addition, the University of Birmingham have offered a broad suite of other interdisciplinary experiences such as trips to the Lake District, Brussels, Romania, Rome, and now a Summer School.

The Cultural Programme will expand students; education beyond the lecture hall or seminar room and into new and exciting spaces to give them new experiences.

Students will also have the option to decide whether to graduate with a BA, BSc, MArt, MSci or Natural Sciences qualification, all from the same point of entry (Liberal Arts and Sciences), subject to their portfolio of modules.

As a Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences student, students will be part of a vibrant and diverse community that welcomes and celebrates differences.  There are many opportunities to help shape the School, such as participating in student-leadership groups, the themed Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences community meetings, and the curriculum development group. Students can also get involved by taking a role in the thriving Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences Society, or one of the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences official student-ambassador positions (current roles include Media and Communications, and Equality and Diversity). In addition to the Cultural Programme, the University of Birmingham normally has plenty of social events where they can mix with students and staff, such as the regular tea and biscuits on Mondays, the Christmas party, and other events that take place in the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences hub.
