About Bachelor of Science - Environmental Science

Stevenson’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is a versatile program that equips students with a strong biology foundation coupled with a focused study of the interaction between humankind and the environment. Students engage in hands-on, experimental learning activities in a variety of ecosystems ranging from the Chesapeake Bay to Maryland mountains, as well as in Stevenson's 30+ acre campus research forest. The curriculum offers study abroad, service-learning options, and the opportunity to work with community partners, including the Irvine Nature Center, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, National Aquarium, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Stevenson’s School of Sciences gives students the opportunity to work in and collaborate with multiple labs on campus and prepare for an interdisciplinary science career. All labs are designed to fit 20 students, emphasizing small class sizes and focused faculty-student interaction.

Graduates of the Environmental Science program will:

  • Solve environmental problems by integrating knowledge from the natural and social sciences.
  • Evaluate the effects of humans on the biosphere.
  • Apply field and laboratory research skills and techniques to the investigation of scientific questions.
  • Evaluate environmental issues and advances using scientific literature.
  • Communicate scientific findings in written and oral formats appropriate to the specific audience.
  • Conduct himself or herself in a manner consistent with the professional and ethical standards of the discipline.
  • Practice environmental stewardship.
  • Apply academic preparation to professional experiences outside the classroom.
