Program Description
Social work is dedicated to improving society’s well-being by creating a more humane and just society. Social work’s distinguishing characteristics are its: 1) emphasis on person-in-environment by considering various aspects of an individual’s environment (social, political, familial, temporal, spiritual, economic and physical), 2) focus on strengths (as opposed to shortcomings), and 3) steadfast commitment to social justice in the service of empowering individuals, families and communities to meet their needs.
Few professionals offer more diverse employment opportunities. Social workers are employed in a variety of settings including mental health, child welfare, marriage and family, community organization, employee assistance, criminal justice/corrections, developmental disabilities, gerontology, health care, hospice, school social work, substance abuse and public welfare.
All indicators predict a sharp increase in demand for social workers over the next decade. Now is an excellent time to pursue a degree in social work.
