About Dual Degree - Bachelor of Science - Health Science - Public Health & Master of Public Health (4 + 1)

Students apply to the dual degree program as incoming freshmen and are admitted directly into the graduate program at the same time as their admission as undergraduate students. Dual degree students are guaranteed a place in the Master of Science in Public Health program provided they continue, as undergraduate students, to meet program-specific criteria to progress into enrollment in the graduate program. Dual degree students, therefore, have a space reserved for them in the graduate program beginning in their first year, with clear criteria and achievements required to progress into the graduate program.

In the 4+1 option, students complete the bachelor’s degree in the traditional four-year time frame and complete one year of graduate study in the  Master of Public Health (MPH) program, earning both the bachelor’s degree and a Master of Public Health degree within five years. This plan of study allows students to begin their MPH coursework during their senior year, counting up to 12 MPH graduate towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees, thus completing the MPH in only one year. 4+1 dual degree students can earn their MPH in less time and for a reduced cost compared to those who start the MPH after graduation.

The 4+1 Bachelor’s-Master of Public Health option is available to students pursuing almost any undergraduate major, and careful planning of course schedules is necessary to ensure students have space in their schedule to begin graduate coursework.
