About Grade 6 - Boarding
Program Description
In grade 6, students explore the arts, language, health and physical education, mathematics, science and technology, and social studies.
In Lower School classrooms, teaching students how to learn is just as important as teaching the curriculum. The IB philosophy emphasizes the explicit teaching of these strategies, skills, and attitudes – known as approaches to learning (ATL) – across all of its programmes, included the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The key IB approaches to learning skills are as follows:
- Thinking Skills
- Communication Skills
- Social Skills
- Self-management Skills
- Research Skills
As the foundational programme in the IB continuum, the PYP is appropriate for a wide range of learning styles and it prepares children for the challenges of schooling, life, and the future. Teachers are encouraged to bring local and global issues into the classroom and to examine them across subject areas. The curriculum framework is organized around six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who We Are
- Where We Are in Place and Time
- How We Express Ourselves
- How the World Works
- How We Organize Ourselves
- Sharing The Planet
These themes allow teachers to develop a programme of inquiry that is both relevant and rigourous, and involves significant input from students.
