The Department of Physics at Pittsburg State University offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics with six different emphases. Of these emphases, three are designed for students planning to seek graduate study: Professional, Solid State Physics, and Astrophysics. The other three are designed for students going directly into the workforce after graduating: Polymer Physics, Engineering Technology, and the Customized Option. Pittsburg State University also offers a Physics Education emphasis for students planning to teach middle or high school.
The BS in Physics with a Customized Emphasis is an ideal double major with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics or Chemistry; a BBA in Computer Information Systems or a BSET in Technology. This emphasis area also fits well for pre-Medical and Health-related study areas.
As a graduate of this program, students will be well equipped to pursue the avenue of their interest, whether it is entering the workforce or pursuing further education. More than half of the graduates go on to attend graduate school. Most of these graduates successfully attain PhDs in physics, astronomy, or other related fields.
Undergraduate students can become involved in the current research projects of the faculty. These research projects include gamma-ray spectroscopy, planetary science, molecular spectroscopy, nanophysics, and thin film solid state physics.
