About Bachelor of Arts - English - Literature

Studying English is more than just reading and writing. Understanding language, its impact on individuals and communities, and the cultural and historical significance of literature is a vital part of living and working in a global society. Both literature and creative writing concentrations help students develop critical thinking and reasoning skills so they can become an excellent communicator and leader. These skills will prepare them for careers in many settings, including nonprofits, media organizations, schools, and businesses around the world.

The study of English literature offers the discipline students need to read critically, offer constructive feedback on others’ writing, and consider literary representation in a wide range of cultural, historical, and interpretive contexts. Students can focus on their love of reading while developing the skills of a creative and rigorous thinker, effective communicator, and flexible problem solver—skills they can use in any number of careers or fields.

English Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate effective writing skills, including the ability to produce scholarly and/or creative work.
  • Demonstrate effective reading skills, including analysis and theoretically informed interpretation of literary texts.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complex connections among literature, culture, history, and identity formation, including ethical, religious, and spiritual dimensions.
