4-Term Pathway - International Foundation Year in Social Sciences and Humanities - Continue to Bachelor of Arts - History, Philosophy and Politics (Placement Year)

This program will prepare students for entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree in a wide range of subjects, including many based at the £10m LICA building. Popular subjects include law, film studies, sociology, linguistics and politics.

Lancaster’s History, Philosophy and Politics degree is a triple major combined degree, taught by experts from our Department of History and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion. The study of Intellectual History, Philosophy and Politics gives students the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of each discipline and understand how they intersect with and influence one another.

In the first year, students will study three compulsory modules giving them a detailed introduction to each discipline. The modules include From the Medieval to the Modern: History and Historians; Introduction to Philosophy, and Politics in the Modern World. In the second and third years, students will move on to a range of optional modules covering the periods, movements and schools of thought that have shaped the world we live in and continue to shape the contemporary world. As the novelist William Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It's not even past.”

Placement Year

Sometimes known as a year in industry, the placement year will take place between the second and final year of study and this will extend the degree to four years.
