About 4-Term Pathway - International Foundation Year in Social Sciences and Humanities - Continue to Bachelor of Arts - French Studies and Spanish Studies
This program will prepare students for entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree in a wide range of subjects, including many based at the £10m LICA building. Popular subjects include law, film studies, sociology, linguistics and politics.
Join an international community. Take part in extracurricular activities such as language lunch clubs. Stand out to employers with one of many languages degrees –a badge of excellence in both language ability and intercultural understanding.
A Pioneering Approach
During the course, as well as developing high-level language skills, students develop a thorough understanding of Francophone and Hispanophone cultures. They’ll consider the society, politics and history of the languages they’re speaking.
Students may have studied both French and Spanish to A level. In which case, consolidate they can skills with Advanced programmes. But if they’d like to pick up French or Spanish again having only studied them for GCSE, or have never studied them before, they’ll advance quickly with the Intensive Beginners programme. This degree takes students to C1/C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.
International Placement
Spending the third year abroad is an invaluable opportunity to develop language skills while immersing oneself in the social and cultural life of local communities.
Choose to study in a target language at one of the international partner universities. Or gain experience on a work placement - past examples include the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid and a communications agency in France. Students could also work as a language assistant in a school or college. Whatever route students choose, they’ll be helped to prepare in the special second year employability module.
Beginners Languages
Studying a language from beginners level is somewhat intense in nature so students are only allowed to study one language from beginners level. Please bear this in mind when looking at the first year module options. If students apply to study a degree with a language from beginners level, their optional modules will only include higher level languages and modules in other subject areas.
